Candidate Interviewing & Selection

In a management position it is likely that one of the responsibilities will be to interview and hire candidates.  While this may seem overwhelming, there is an 8-step process to make it feasible.

Submit recruiting documents

Each organization or school will have an Human Resources department that you must go through in order to submit a request for hire.  For the specific unit, consult with your HR department.

Selection process

It is important to identify skills and job attributes you seek in a new employee before completing anything else.  Request a written document for part of the application to see what the candidate’s writing style is like.  Once these materials and the applications have been gathered, a phone interview or in person interview may be conducted.

Search committee/interview panel

This committee should be a combination of other staff members, managers or supervisors from other departments on campus, or any other related parties.  This is important because it’s beneficial to see the different perspectives they can provide when looking at the same candidate.

Interviewing (full description of interview tools on the link here)

When interviewing candidates, the questions can really guide the conversation you have with them.  For example, using non-directive questions will allow the candidate to think critically, provide examples and in-depth examples of past experiences of why they are qualified for “x” position.

Making hiring decisions

After completing the steps above, matching an applicant with the skills and qualities that were originally on the job posting, confirming the written pieces of the application, and the results of the in-person interviews, it is time to make a selection.  At this step, if there is still uncertainty, it’s okay to request a second interview for 1+ candidates to solidify your decision.

Documentation

Before notifying the new employee, it is necessary to contact the employment manager or the equivalent at your organization or school.  This documentation will include things related to the applicants: applications, work samples, resumes, reference letters, interview notes, reference check notes, etc.
