Managing Effective Teams
The following are ten tools we can use in order to lead and manage our teams effectively:
1. Navigate the 4 stages of team development (forming, storming, norming, and performing)- leader is a harmonizing influence to the team.
2. Renewing vision and creating hope- define employee roles, give clear direction for tasks at hand, but also grant independence and give some responsibility to employees.
3. Building and fixing relationships- encourage listening, brainstorming, and respect individuality.
4. Core values- remember the mission of your organization and stay grounded in the organization’s values and principles.
5. Embrace flexibility and change- encourage creativity and welcome feedback from your employees.
6. Business analytics- using SWOT Team Analysis or some other framework for decision making is crucial in the analytical stage.
7. Strategy- each employee will have different strategies for completing a project. Understanding that some things take time, and it helps to break up tasks in small sections rather than trying to complete the entirety of it in a short amount of time.
8. Eradicate obstacles- empower employees and provide opportunities for growth.
9. Measure performance and results- performance needs to be meaningfully rewarded. Even verbal nuances can let an employee know they are doing a good job.
10. Trimming and pruning- each employee is responsible for meeting their goals. If they don’t, it might be necessary to move them to a different unit, delegate different tasks, or even let them go.
