Promoting Diversity
Promoting diversity on college campuses is vital in today’s globalized world. While we have many different ways of measuring diversity on campuses, it might be more helpful to focus on how we can promote diversity through students and to students. In order to do this we can follow the steps below:
-
Speak out when hearing racist, sexist, or other sterotypical comments
-
Learn about different cultures and lifestyles and where people are from
-
Learn about myself and even about my family’s heritage
-
Examine personal attitudes of denigration
-
Stay updated about current trends and events addressing racism and discrimination
-
Celebrate our differences through food, music, dance, language, etc.
-
Treat people as individuals and be sure to not generalize based off of ethnicity, religion, etc.
-
Be part of the solution and talk with others about how to respond to issues regarding diversity
